Drawn. work by hand

Working in our RVJ we need to show ideas and development, thought text, labels, drawings photos etc... Working in our RVJs enables a physical connection between your hand, eye and brain. when taken in steps it can help decode an idea we are thinking of, by drawing ideas you can clearly see what you were thinking because your mind can wander and the idea you have you can forget or change.
Our RVJ should not be perfect the drawings are not going to be put in frames they are to help you develop. The development drawings don't just have to be with pen and paper they could be using fabric and stitch  Sometimes we need to make small labels on your drawings to remind ourselves, this will help later when we come back and analyse the work.
Danny Gregory was someone I looked at for inspiration, his journals were full of first hand drawings which weren't all fantastic drawings but showed thoughts and could inspire possible work. He also used rough color which itself could be inspiring, I particularly like the way his color wasn't neatly done the colors merged and when over the edges of the drawing.
Our RVJs are meant to show functional drawings, development of concepts, exploring, testing and trying new methods and ideas.

Someone elces journals I looked at was Tommy Kane

Brain. Utilize your creative side of the brain

The brain has two half’s, the right side of the brain is (child at play) playful, innocent, experimental and sensitive. The left side of the brain is (an accountant) analysis and questions "what is useful". By knowing which side of the brain we are using can help when working. By knowing you are using the playful side of your brain we can switch to analysis to review your work to help improve it.” What is it?” “Why this colour” “How can this become something”. The work in our RVJ must have a purpose the right side of the brain can’t be left to go mad it must have a theme or there must be general intentions before play. We must always have a good mix of left and right side of the brain both are need to develop and move forward.

Stefan Sagmeister

Stefan Sagmeister

Stefan Sagmeister was one of the first graphic designers I was introduced to. His ingenious typography inspired me to try and manipulate the world around me to express messages, thoughts, opinions etc...
It was not just his work that was different but the way he represented it. The postcard images shown above we displayed on billboards. It is because of this that i feel the message though it might be the first thing you read,is lost there is soo much going on in them.
